First Home Checklist

Buying your first home is a big milestone, and the excitement you’ll feel will likely be matched by nerves about the whole process! The good news is that once you’ve purchased your affordable Sydney home, moving can be easy and stress-free if you plan carefully, and follow our tips below.

 Confirm Your Move Date

This is your first step once your mortgage is confirmed and contracts are complete. Once you know your moving date, everything else can fall into place around it.

Get Insured

Now you’re the proud owner of a contemporary Australian home, you’ll need full home insurance to protect your property. Shop around for a good deal that covers everything you need, and make sure to get contents insurance as well. In addition to this, you’ll need to inform your car insurance provider of your new situation.

Get Connected

You’ll need to make sure your new home is connected to utilities ready for you to move in. Arrange for gas, water and electricity first as these are of course very necessary! The next step is to sign up to providers for internet, phone and pay TV. Find out how long each of these processes will take so you can have everything ready when you move in.

Sort, Buy and Borrow

In the months and weeks before the move you should go through all your possessions and get rid of what you don’t want to take with you. At this stage you’ll also work out what furniture you have and what else you might need. Friends and relatives are likely to be able to help you out with spare furniture and essential items until you’re able to buy everything you want for your dream home. The most important thing is to make sure you have a bed and linens for the first day – you’ll be very glad of having somewhere to crash out once moving day is done!

Get Essential Appliances

Arrange for any necessary electronics such as washing machine, fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave etc. to be delivered the day after you arrive if you don’t already own them. New Living Homes offer an Essential Upgrades package to take the job of organising this off your hands by pre-installing many useful items such as dishwasher, oven and gas cooktop, range hood, microwave and more.

Get Packing

You can start packing for your move a few weeks before the big day. Anything you don’t use very often – clothes for other seasons, DVD or book collections, spare crockery and infrequently used appliances can all be packed well in advance to get them out of the way. Make sure each box is carefully labelled, so if you do suddenly need your winter coat or a special vase it won’t take forever to find it!

Plan The Day

Recruit friends and family to help with your move day, make sure children and pets are taken care of elsewhere to keep them out of the way and confirm that truck hire or removalists are ready to go. Assign tasks to everyone involved and make sure they know how the day will run. Then finally, it’s time to move into your beautiful new home!
